Malloy James | special project fellow

Malloy James is a New York City-based musician, composer, engineer, and sound designer. Rooted deeply in hip hop and neo-soul, James’s work-taps into an electronic, psychedelic vibe, with modern trap and rock influences also playing apart.

In addition to his solo artistic practice, James specializes in the creation of immersive audio compositions as physical and digital extensions of artistic installations. In this vein, he has created audio experiences for collaborations with esteemed architects and designers as well as the likes of Lexus International, the NationalBuilding Museum, and the Miami Design District, among others.

He is, additionally, a visual artist. Working primarily in painting and photography, his work has been shown in group exhibitions across the US and Europe.

In 2024, he was selected for the inaugural residency program at the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation, an institution set in an iconic Alvar Aalto-designed structure in Finland dedicated to creative exchange and collaboration.

James earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Composition from The Juilliard School.
