The Candle:
Scars of Ideas, Memorial Reflection by Studio Omer Polak

2023/2024

For our latest dieDAS works commission, we invited Israeli-born, Berlin-based designer Omer Polak to create a special object to reflect our institution’s mission. Acknowledging the dieDAS site’s dark history—marked by racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia—and our commitment to a brighter future through discourse and creativity, Polak designed this limited-edition memorial candle, entitled Scars of Ideas, Memorial Reflection. It is intended both to honor the countless victims of the past and to symbolize the change and hope that comes through creative exchange.

Scars adorn each candle as a reminder of the complexity of human experience—and the transformation and growth that is possible when we choose to learn from the past. The candle’s design represents both the shadows of history and the illuminating potential of creative ideas. The candle is imbued with the scent of soil, symbolizing our transient existence in this world—our inception and eventual return to the earth.

Each candle is poured by Berlin-based Garden State Candles. The work is available in a numbered, limited edition of 100. The handmade nature of the project renders each piece one-of-a-kind.
