Thanks to the generous support of the Musikfonds e.V. and the Land Sachsen-Anhalt, the Marzona Foundation and dieDAS welcomed LABOUR and the Landesschule Pforta to their Open House on June 25, 2023. The musicians and artists brought a site-specific sound installation, musical performances, and public workshops to the Saalecker Werkstätten, the former residence of Nazi ideologist and architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg.
During the event, the unique acoustic properties of the Saalecker Werkstätten and surrounding estate were presented to the public in a musical confrontation of the reclaimed "uncomfortable monument."
Students of the Landesschule Pforta performed pieces of classical music curated by the pianist and music pedagogue Silvia Heyder. The concert featured music once labeled “degenerate” and“undesirable” by the Nazi Regime.
Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander, the creative forces of LABOUR, organized a series of three events, starting with the creation of a sonic journey during the Open House, that relates directly to the site and its dark history. Additionally, the duo lead a workshop during our summer fellowship program 2023 to guide fellows through an active listening exploration of the space. Finally, our fellows will had the chance to feature LABOUR in their final works, which has been presented at the dieDAS walk + talk summit on September 2, 2023.
Visitors from Saaleck, the region and beyond were encouraged to take part in this free and public Open House.
